Ring, the home security systems company, latest camera is taking flight… literally. The new Always Home Cam (AHC) is an autonomous drone with an attached camera that flies around inside your property to offer a perspective of any room you want when you’re not at home, reports theverge.com. Once it has stopped flying, the AHC returns to its dock to recharge. The device is expected to cost USD249.99 when it begins shipping early next year.

Jamie Siminoff, Ring’s founder and “Chief Inventor,” explains, the idea behind the Always Home Cam is “to provide multiple viewpoints throughout the property without requiring the use of multiple cameras.” In a recent interview, he said the company had spent the past two years on developing the device, and that due to advancements in drone technology, it is an “obvious product, but very hard to build.”

The AHC is fully autonomous and property owners can program it for what path to take and where to go. The owner is able to create a map of their home for the device to follow and program in specific viewpoints such as the kitchen or bedroom. The drone can be commanded to fly on demand or programmed to fly when a disturbance is detected by a linked Ring Alarm system.

The charging dock “blocks the camera’s view so the camera only records when it is in flight.” Ring says the drone makes an audible noise when flying so it becomes obvious when footage is being recorded.

The company says the camera can be used for simple things like checking if a stove is left on, a window is open, or if a door is locked when you’re away from the home. The drone features obstacle avoidance technology to allow it to bypass objects in the way, while the shrouded propellers prevent damage to property or hurting a pet or person that might collide with it.
